In today’s context of global recovery, sustainable growth cannot be achieved without the proper understanding of the international business environment. Institutional factors that affect the firm’s performance can be categorized into socio-political, regional, cultural, economic and legal elements. The paper brings out the larger picture of how, when, where these factors threaten the firm’s business. In response, the firm acts by framing a defensive strategy model that puts it command over a period of time in the future. The concept of framing and formulation of an international business strategy largely depends on the economic system that prevails in the region. (For ex) The State’s guidelines are strictly followed were communism prevails. But certain regions adapt to changes like Chinese taxation policies now encourages public and private sector to grow.
Legal system comes in to play when the business starts with a contract of labor. Democratic countries have ‘Common law’ that have a very detailed contract and others, ‘Civil law’ where the contract length is minimized. However minute details about the contract should be specific in civil legal systems (John B. Cullen And K. Praveen Parboteeah, 2010). Based on the organization’s mode of control, functioning and efficiency, Barlett and Ghosal (1989) proposed four principal types of international strategies namely multinational, global, international and transnational. Formulation of an international Business Strategy involves a series of steps that includes choosing one model from the above mentioned strategy types. After choosing the appropriate model a SWOT analysis is required. The paper specifies the link between the environmental factors upon strategy formulation process.
